Backend Engineer -- Platform
Remote Middle $2.5k–$8.4k/moest.
Summary
Intempt.com is an agentic growth platform combining CDP, CRM, experimentation, personalization, recommendations, journeys, analytics, and AI agents in one event-centric platform. We're seeking a Backend Engineer to own critical systems including event pipelines, identity resolution, and data layer infrastructure. You'll work in a small, high-output team where you own systems, not just tickets.
What you'll do
- Build and maintain event pipeline with Kafka ingestion, Flink processing, and real-time event validation and deduplication
- Develop identity resolution systems for anonymous-to-known merging, cross-device stitching, account grouping, and attribute reconciliation
- Design and optimize data layers across Postgres, Redis, Neo4j, and ClickHouse for profiles, sessions, graphs, and analytics
- Build LLM infrastructure including prompt routing, model selection, token budgets, response caching, and failover mechanisms
- Develop and maintain public APIs for tracking, identify, consent, recommendations, and data management
- Debug edge cases in profile merging, experiment metrics, and data attribution
- Optimize database queries and system performance at scale (millions of events/day)
- Integrate third-party data sources like Shopify and HubSpot into unified profiles
Requirements
- Java: Deep, production-level expertise including JVM tuning, GC behavior, concurrency, and data structures at 50k+ events/sec
- Postgres: Migrations, indexing, connection pooling, and replication experience
- Redis: Advanced knowledge beyond caching, including pub/sub and sorted sets
- Kafka: Topic design, consumer groups, backpressure, and exactly-once semantics
- Flink: Strong preferred; stateful processing, windowing, and checkpointing
- Data Systems: Working knowledge of ClickHouse or Neo4j (ideally both)
- LLM Integration: Production inference API experience with token limits, latency, retries, and cost control
- Backend Systems: 3-5 years building backend systems
- Problem Ownership: Root cause analysis, full deployment cycle, and monitoring capability
- Communication: Strong written and verbal English for design docs, PR descriptions, and postmortems
Conditions
- Schedule: Full-time
- Work Environment: Work directly with founder and experienced backend engineers
- Autonomy: Context-driven, not micromanaged
- Team: Small, high-output team
- Opportunity: Shape a young codebase
- Hiring Process: 15-minute Founder Interview, 45-minute Engineering Interview (architecture reasoning, code/system walkthroughs, scaling and failure-mode thinking)
- Equal Opportunity: Equal opportunity employer with no discrimination based on race, religion, color, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, marital status, veteran status, or disability
