Summary
Norfolk Fire-Rescue (City of Norfolk) is hiring experienced cross-trained Firefighter/EMS providers at EMT-Advanced, EMT-Intermediate, and EMT-Paramedic levels. The role supports emergency response operations by providing fire suppression, rescue, and pre-hospital medical care while maintaining readiness through training, planning, and station duties.
What you'll do
- Respond to fire, medical, hazardous materials, and technical rescue emergencies (including incidents that may be declared acts of terrorism) to mitigate hazards and provide patient care.
- Support the incident commander with trained operational response during emergency incidents.
- Participate in training activities to maintain operational and clinical readiness.
- Complete recordkeeping and related documentation duties.
- Conduct pre-incident planning activities.
- Perform fire safety inspections and support public education initiatives.
- Maintain equipment and facilities.
- Serve in Operations or Administration assignments as needed.
- Remain subject to emergency recall during times of operational need.
Requirements
- High school diploma or GED equivalent.
- Completion of an endorsed Fire Academy or other training program approved by the Fire Chief and completion of the Firefighter Recruit probationary period with Norfolk Fire-Rescue.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Current Virginia Department of Fire Programs Firefighter II certification or approved equivalent reciprocity.
- Hazmat Awareness and Operations, Emergency Vehicle Operations, and/or other Firefighter Professional Qualifications as required by the Virginia Administrative Code.
- Current Virginia Department of Health certification and current sanctioning to practice at the applicable level (EMT-A, EMT-I, or EMT-P).
- Approved Basic Life Support (BLS) and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification.
- Successful completion of the Tidewater Emergency Services Protocol Test (TEMS).
- National Incident Management System/Incident Command System coursework: ICS 100, 200, 700, and 800.
- Successful completion of medical physical examinations and maintenance of medical fitness for duty as determined by the City of Norfolk physician.
Conditions
Salary ranges (annual):
Firefighter EMT-Advanced: $60,000 - $83,054
Firefighter EMT-Intermediate: $64,000 - $88,591
Firefighter EMT-Paramedic: $70,000 - $91,334- May be assigned to Operations or Administration.
- Subject to emergency recall during times of operational need.
