Summary
Notion is building Notion Mail to rethink how email fits into the broader Notion workspace and reduce context switching with AI-assisted workflows. The Software Engineer, Mail role focuses on building and evolving backend systems (infrastructure, data models, and asynchronous workflows) that enable reliable syncing and AI-powered inbox experiences.
What you'll do
Own systems and infrastructure that power AI-assisted email communication workflows at scale.
Build and evolve reliable data flows and data models to keep email state accurate and up to date.
Design asynchronous processing systems that support high-volume, low-latency product experiences.
Partner with engineering, product, and design to deliver end-to-end features from backend foundations to customer-facing experiences.
Improve production health by strengthening observability, improving performance, and increasing operational reliability over time.
Requirements
Systems design and production infrastructure experience, including hands-on work with Kubernetes and observability/telemetry (e.g., Honeycomb) and operating reliable production systems.
Strong data modeling skills; ability to design correct, evolvable, performant data models and APIs.
Ownership and initiative in fast-moving, unstructured environments; comfort taking on ambiguous problems.
Pragmatic problem-solving mindset balancing craft, speed, business impact, and maintainability.
Collaborative communication skills and ability to work cross-functionally.
Curiosity and willingness to adopt AI tools (AI expertise not required).
Nice to have: full-stack experience/interest; experience with high-volume async job execution/orchestration; AWS infrastructure; distributed systems background.
Conditions
Hybrid with required in-office work on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays (Anchor Days); some teams may require additional in-office days.
Highly competitive cash compensation, equity, and benefits.
Estimated base salary range for San Francisco or New York City: $176,000–$207,000 per year (varies by location, scope, and experience).
