Investigator

National Legal Aid & Defender Association is seeking an Investigator to provide investigative and litigation support for cases pending in federal court. The role focuses on developing case facts and client background information and supporting attorneys through hearings and trials.

• Investigate the facts of cases and the client’s life history.
• Locate and interview victims, witnesses, and law enforcement personnel.
• Prepare detailed and accurate interview memoranda.
• Photograph and/or sketch relevant locations, including crime scenes.
• Review, organize, and analyze discovery and documentation, including electronic formats.
• Locate and obtain public and private records (e.g., criminal, medical, court proceedings, social media).
• Assist attorneys at hearings or trials by evaluating testimony and coordinating witnesses and documents.
• Support digital presentations for hearings/trials.
• Testify in court if necessary.
• Serve subpoenas and notify defense witnesses of court appearances.
• Conduct client background investigations for medical, psychological, criminal, and other records.

• Ability to conduct investigations and gather case-related facts and client background information.
• Experience locating and interviewing victims, witnesses, and law enforcement personnel.
• Ability to write detailed and accurate interview memoranda.
• Ability to review, organize, and analyze discovery, including electronic formats.
• Ability to locate and obtain public and private records (criminal, medical, court, social media).
• Ability to support attorneys during hearings and trials, including coordinating witnesses/documents and assisting with digital presentations.
• Ability to serve subpoenas and communicate court appearance notifications to witnesses.
• Willingness/ability to testify if required.
