Summary
GirlTREK is a grassroots, movement-building nonprofit focused on Black women’s health and community power. The Fractional Human Resources Director provides part-time strategic and operational HR leadership to build people operations infrastructure, ensure compliance, and strengthen culture in support of the organization’s mission.
What you'll do
- Partner with executive leadership to align HR strategy with organizational goals and mission; develop a roadmap for people operations.
- Advise on organizational structure, workforce planning, talent strategy, employee relations, performance management, and culture; support the board on HR governance matters.
- Maintain strict confidentiality while supporting conflict resolution and de-escalation; determine when escalation to leadership is required.
- Apply restorative and trauma-informed practices to repair harm, strengthen relationships, and foster psychological safety; use a culturally responsive lens across HR functions.
- Measure and monitor employee satisfaction and organizational culture.
- Manage and optimize impact/performance processes through Culture Amp (goal-setting, feedback cycles, engagement surveys) and provide data-informed insights.
- Coach managers on feedback, goal-setting, and performance issues while reinforcing accountability and care; provide professional development resources and training.
- Establish/refine and document HR policies and procedures (handbook, onboarding, performance management, offboarding); create job descriptions, compensation frameworks, and org charts.
- Implement appropriate HR technology solutions; ensure compliance with federal, state, and local labor regulations while protecting sensitive data.
- Design and maintain transparent pay bands using Payscale and other tools; coordinate annual compensation reviews and market benchmarking.
- Manage benefits administration (health, retirement, leave); liaise with benefits brokers, payroll providers, and vendors; coordinate accurate payroll with finance.
- Serve as the point person for HR/benefits questions, including systems managed through JustWorks; support annual benefits renewal and communications.
- Lead recruiting for key roles (strategy, sourcing, candidate management); manage workflows in JazzHR and JustWorks and ensure an equitable, representative candidate experience.
- Develop interviewing processes and assessment tools; create offer letters/employment agreements and negotiate compensation packages.
- Design retention strategies and engagement initiatives; establish succession planning frameworks for critical roles.
Requirements
- 8+ years of progressive HR or people operations experience (mission-driven or nonprofit experience preferred).
- Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field.
- Strong knowledge of employment laws and regulations (including FMLA, ADA, Title VII, FLSA).
- Proven expertise in performance management, compensation design, and leadership coaching.
- Hands-on experience with Culture Amp, JazzHR, Payscale, and JustWorks (strongly preferred).
- Exceptional emotional intelligence, discretion, and communication skills.
- Deep understanding of culturally responsive HR practices and demonstrated commitment to equity and inclusion.
- Experience working fractionally or in a consulting capacity with growing teams.
- Experience building HR functions from the ground up and/or scaling HR operations.
- Expertise in employee relations, compliance, and policy development.
- Strong business acumen with ability to think strategically while executing tactically.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Proficiency with HRIS systems and Microsoft Office Suite.
Conditions
Time commitment: Approximately 15–20 hours per week, with flexibility based on project load and organizational needs.
Work arrangement: Remote from a home office.
Compensation: $5,500 per month.
