FIREFIGHTER

The City of Pullman is hiring Firefighters to protect life and property through fire suppression, fire prevention/inspection, fire investigation support, and emergency medical response. The role serves on a shift under the direction of a Fire Captain or Fire Lieutenant, responding to fires, medical emergencies, and other hazards. New hires attend a fire academy and earn IFSAC Firefighter 1, Firefighter 2, and Haz Mat Operations certifications.

• Respond to fires, hazardous incidents, medical emergencies, and accidents; operate under hazardous and high-stress conditions.
• Drive ambulances and fire apparatus in all weather and traffic conditions; transport patients and provide emergency medical care within certification level.
• Perform disentanglement and extrication at accident scenes using hand and power tools.
• Control and extinguish fires and hazardous chemicals using water, chemicals, dry powders, and gases; select and operate hose/nozzles and related equipment.
• Conduct evacuations and protect life/property by controlling hazards, moving property, and using protective covers.
• Place and climb ladders to access upper levels and assist occupants; create openings for ventilation or entry using tools.
• Complete required documentation including ambulance records and fire reports; complete and route forms and reports.
• Conduct daily/weekly vehicle and equipment checks and maintenance; make minor repairs or report needed repairs.
• Inspect businesses and residences (including student housing) for ordinance compliance; support investigations to determine probable fire cause.
• Prepare for, conduct, and participate in drills and training sessions.
• Maintain station equipment and grounds, including housekeeping and routine maintenance (e.g., painting, mopping, cleaning, general repairs).
• Deliver public presentations on assigned safety topics.
• Maintain regular, dependable attendance and interact professionally with city staff and the public.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

• High school diploma/GED or equivalent.
• Minimum age 21 by date of hire.
• U.S. citizen or authorized to work in the United States.
• Ability to read, write, speak, and comprehend English.
• Valid EMT certification: EMT (BLS) or EMT Advanced (ILS) or EMT Paramedic (ALS).
• Current Washington State or National Registry EMT/EMT-P by application deadline; ability to obtain Washington State certification within 60 days after academy completion (if applicable).
• Valid driver’s license by application deadline; ability to obtain Washington driver’s license within 90 days of hire (if needed).
• Safe/good driving record as verified by background investigation.
• Pass mandatory pre-employment medical physical.
• Ability to pass Washington State Fire Academy (if applicable) and meet RCW 41.08.070 minimum requirements.
• Ability to read, comprehend, and apply fire suppression, prevention, inspection, and emergency medical materials.
• Mechanical aptitude to perform a variety of mechanical operations.
• Ability to reason and react quickly and calmly in emergencies and situations involving personal danger.
• Ability to perform prolonged, strenuous work under adverse conditions; physical strength and agility to perform essential functions.
• Effective oral and written communication; ability to follow oral and written instructions.
• Ability to learn firefighting duties/methods and operate firefighting equipment within a reasonable work test period.
• Testing process requirements include a written exam (entry-level) and a current, valid CPAT completed within the last 12 months and by the stated deadline.

• Schedule: 4-platoon schedule with a 47.5-hour workweek; includes 24-hour shifts.
• Work settings: office, vehicle, and outdoor environments in all weather and temperature extremes; frequent exposure to smoke, fumes, chemicals, confined spaces, darkness, loud noise at emergency scenes, and other hazards.
• Physical demands: frequent lifting/moving up to 40 lbs; occasional lifting/moving up to 150 lbs; may share patient loads up to 600 lbs with others.
• Training: new employees attend a fire academy and receive IFSAC Firefighter 1, Firefighter 2, and Haz Mat Operations certifications (lateral hires may complete all/part as required).
• Pay determined by collective bargaining (IAFF Local 1892); 2026 pay scale Step 1 $6,564/month to Step 5 $7,979/month; paramedic premium 11% of salary step.
• Education incentive: 2% (associate) and 4% (bachelor’s).
