Firefighter
Summary
The City of Racine Fire Department is hiring Firefighters to protect and serve the Racine community through emergency response and prevention programs. Under the direction of a Company Officer, this role supports fire suppression, EMS, technical rescue, hazardous materials response, and station/equipment readiness. The department operates from six fire stations and emphasizes training aligned with NFPA standards.
What you'll do
Respond to emergency incidents to provide life safety, incident stabilization, and property conservation.
Perform fire suppression, rescue/extrication, hazardous materials control/containment, and related emergency operations while using PPE and SCBA as required.
Provide out-of-hospital emergency medical care, including basic and advanced life support skills and CPR.
Participate in community risk reduction activities, including public education and code enforcement efforts.
Drive and operate fire department apparatus and equipment after successful completion of the department certification process.
Maintain fire stations, apparatus, equipment, facilities, and grounds in a state of readiness.
Complete required training, study relevant materials, and attend approved internal/external fire service courses.
Accurately enter operational data into computer systems in a timely manner.
Follow department policies/procedures, communicate effectively, carry out orders, and support a positive team environment.
Requirements
High school diploma or GED (official transcripts required).
Valid driver’s license (Wisconsin preferred; if out of state, must obtain a Wisconsin driver’s license within 60 days after completion of the probationary period).
Wisconsin State Certified Firefighter I.
Valid, active Wisconsin licensed EMT-Basic.
U.S. citizen or Lawful Permanent Resident.
Ability to meet essential job functions consistent with NFPA 1001.
Must meet requirements under NFPA 1500 and OSHA 1910.134 for wearing a department-provided respirator (SCBA).
Maintain fitness levels required to safely perform strenuous duties in hazardous environments.
Preferred:
Valid, active Wisconsin licensed EMT-Paramedic.
NIMS IS 100, 200, 700, 800 (and NIMS 300, 400 highly desirable).
Wisconsin certifications such as Firefighter II, Driver/Operator Pumper, Driver/Operator Aerial, Emergency Services Instructor I, Fire Officer I.
Special requirements:
Notarized affidavit authorizing release of information.
Valid CPAT certificate (must be valid at the time of Police and Fire Commission interviews; valid for one year; otherwise must re-apply in the next process).
Pass comprehensive medical exam and drug/alcohol screening prior to employment.

Work occurs in fire stations and on non-emergency and emergency scenes; may include off-duty recall for major emergencies.

Potential exposure to hazardous/toxic chemicals and gases, temperature extremes, cramped spaces, heights, sub-surface environments, and infectious diseases.
Selection process may include written examination, panel interviews, background checks, Police and Fire Commission interview, and pre-employment medical screening.
