Human Resources Manager

Summary

BYP100 is a national, member-based organization of Black activists and organizers focused on justice and freedom for all Black people through leadership development, direct action organizing, advocacy, and political education using a Black queer feminist lens. The Human Resources Manager will build and lead a people-centered HR function during a period of organizational transition and growth, creating systems and practices that support a remote national team. The role partners with leadership to ensure compliant, values-aligned HR infrastructure centered on care, equity, and accountability.

What you'll do

  • Lead recruitment strategy including sourcing, hiring, onboarding, and orientation.
  • Build systems to attract and retain high-performing, mission-aligned staff; keep job descriptions current, compliant, and aligned with organizational structure.
  • Support employee lifecycle processes (promotions, transitions, offboarding); conduct exit interviews and identify retention trends.
  • Serve as a trusted advisor to staff on HR policies, workplace concerns, and conflict resolution.
  • Support performance management processes, including coaching managers and addressing performance issues.
  • Facilitate conflict resolution, mediations, and grievance processes as needed; promote a healthy, accountable, values-aligned culture.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain HR policies, procedures, and the employee handbook.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations.
  • Manage benefits administration including enrollment and vendor coordination; manage benefits renewals.
  • Track HR metrics, analyze trends, and provide reports to leadership; maintain HR systems and accurate employee documentation.
  • Design and implement employee engagement strategies for a remote workforce; lead initiatives to build connection, belonging, and morale.
  • Plan and support staff trainings, retreats, and internal development opportunities; establish metrics to evaluate engagement and satisfaction.
  • Process payroll bi-weekly and ensure weekly timesheet completion.
  • Assess staffing capacity and identify functional/staff gaps; make recommendations supporting organizational growth.
  • Manage salary structures, benchmarking, and compensation reviews; partner with leadership on workforce planning and organizational design.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of experience in Human Resources or related roles (HR Generalist or Manager level).
  • Strong knowledge of HR best practices, employment law, and compliance requirements.
  • Experience managing HR systems, benefits, and employee lifecycle processes.
  • Demonstrated ability to support a remote workforce and foster engagement.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to navigate sensitive and complex situations.
  • High discretion and integrity in handling confidential information.
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to build systems in evolving, fast-paced environments.
  • Preferred:

    • Experience working in nonprofit and/or social justice organizations.
    • PHR or SHRM-CP certification.

Conditions

  • Type: Full-time, regular (bargaining unit position represented by Chicago and Midwest Regional Board, Workers United).

  • Location: Remote; quarterly travel required.
