The City of La Palma is hiring a part-time Recreation Specialist to help deliver recreation and community service programs in a small, family-oriented work environment. The role supports the community by coordinating, promoting, implementing, and evaluating activities for youth, adults, and families while ensuring safe and well-maintained facilities.
What you'll do
- Administer, coordinate, develop, promote, implement, and evaluate recreation and community service programs and activities for youth, adults, and families.
- Coordinate and supervise daily drop-in activities at City and school facilities.
- Plan and implement recreation, sports programs, and special events for all age groups.
- Prepare and coordinate program publicity materials (e.g., press releases, flyers, pamphlets, brochures).
- Prepare work plans, measure program effectiveness, assist with program evaluation, and provide recommendations.
- Prepare reports and correspondence; maintain records and program documentation.
- Provide facility and equipment support (set-ups, sports field preparation, record keeping, basic maintenance).
- Ensure public and staff safety by monitoring safe use of facilities, equipment, and supplies; maintain clean and orderly environments.
- Identify maintenance/safety issues; perform minor maintenance and coordinate repairs.
- Assist with supply/equipment estimates; order/purchase/obtain supplies and maintain inventory.
- Set up and operate recreational/educational/cleaning equipment and standard office equipment including computers.
- Assist with recreation facility rentals, scheduling, and facility preparation.
- Administer basic first aid.
- May supervise part-time staff, volunteers, and facilities where recreational activities occur.
- Perform miscellaneous support duties (answer phones, type correspondence, run errands, pick up supplies) and other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Knowledge of recreation, community service, or sports activities and programs.
- Knowledge of mentoring and being a positive role model for youth.
- Knowledge of basic first aid.
- Skill in planning and implementing recreation and sports programs and special events for all age groups.
- Ability to provide strong customer service and treat residents/visitors as customers.
- Ability to maintain enthusiasm and willingness to learn.
- Ability to plan and organize work to meet schedules and deadlines.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, orally and in writing.
- Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships.
- Education/Experience: High school diploma or equivalent and at least two years of paid part-time experience as a leader in a recreational activity or assistant in a variety of recreation programs (two years of college coursework may substitute for one year of experience).
- Must be at least 18 years old.
- Must possess an appropriate California driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record.
- Selection/employment contingencies may include testing/interviews, background investigation (including criminal record check), and post-offer medical exam including drug and alcohol screen.
Conditions
- Employment type: Part-time.
- Work setting: City and school facilities; frequent outdoor work in weather conditions; moderate noise when in the field.
- Physical demands: frequent walking/running/sitting; occasional climbing/balancing/stooping/kneeling/crouching/crawling; occasional lifting/moving up to 50 pounds.
