Summary

Eastern Washington University (EWU), a public regional university in Washington, is hiring an Associate Vice President of Facilities to provide strategic leadership and operational oversight of the university’s physical infrastructure. The role ensures a safe, functional, and sustainable campus environment supporting student success and oversees long-range capital planning, resource management, and service delivery across facilities units.

What you'll do

  • Develop and implement long-term capital planning aligned with the campus master plan and the university’s strategic plan.
  • Identify and implement best practices in facilities management, sustainability, and operational efficiency; implement and monitor KPIs for facilities operations.
  • Advise senior leadership on facilities matters including budget, resource allocation, safety, sustainability, and regulatory compliance.
  • Review and prioritize preservation, maintenance, and infrastructure needs; lead campus space management and chair the space planning advisory committee.
  • Oversee planning, design, and construction of new facilities and renovations; manage relationships with architects, engineers, and contractors; ensure adherence to budget, schedule, quality standards, and university specifications.
  • Ensure compliance with public bidding requirements and applicable federal, state, and local laws and regulations.
  • Direct and manage campus maintenance programs (preventative, corrective, and deferred) and ensure timely, quality support via facilities units and the work order desk.
  • Oversee facilities services functions including custodial, grounds, recycling, snow/ice removal, surplus, trucking, warehouse, and automotive repairs.
  • Develop and manage annual operating and capital budgets; monitor expenditures, identify cost-saving opportunities, and ensure responsible stewardship and compliance with university policies.
  • Coordinate procurement and contracts; recruit, mentor, and evaluate facilities leaders and skilled trades; foster professional development and a collaborative work environment.
  • Be available to respond to emergency calls outside typical business hours and determine appropriate responses.

Requirements

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in architecture, engineering, construction management, facilities management, business, or a related field.
  • Experience: Minimum 10 years of progressively responsible facilities management experience, including at least 2 years in a leadership/management role (higher education preferred).
  • Demonstrated experience with planning, capital construction projects, managing a large workforce, and working in a unionized environment.
  • Strong financial acumen with budget development and management experience.
  • In-depth knowledge of building codes, safety regulations, and environmental compliance.
  • Proven ability to lead, motivate, and develop a diverse team; excellent communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities; demonstrated responsive and flexible approach supporting universal access needs.
  • Preferred: Master’s degree in related discipline; experience with sustainable building practices; experience supervising employees in a unionized environment.

Conditions

  • Schedule: Regular work schedule, typically Monday–Friday, 8:00–5:00; must be available for additional hours including emergencies outside typical hours.
  • Term: 12 months per year; anticipated start date 07/01/2026.
  • Employment status: FLSA Exempt (Executive); administrative exempt position.
