Recreation Specialist
Summary
The City of Coronado is hiring Recreation Specialists to fill multiple vacancies across several recreation divisions. The role supports community programs and facility operations by delivering customer service, leading recreation activities, and ensuring safe, well-run programs and events.
What you'll do
Provide phone and in-person customer service, register patrons for programs, and share general program and facility information.
Organize, lead, or teach specialized recreation programs and activities (e.g., youth programs/camps, adult/senior programs, sports, special events, inclusion support).
Promote and coordinate programs; prepare marketing materials such as flyers, schedules, brochures, and news releases; support social media outreach and special projects (as assigned).
Prepare event and rental spaces; set up, take down, supervise, and act as staff liaison during rental events and facility rentals.
Ensure participant safety; enforce rules; monitor behavior and apply appropriate disciplinary measures when needed.
Inspect assigned facilities for maintenance needs and clean facilities as required.
Develop curriculum and activity calendars; modify activities and schedules as needed.
Evaluate supply and equipment needs; obtain/order and issue supplies and equipment.
Monitor program performance; recommend and implement improvements to systems and procedures.
Maintain records and prepare reports on programs and effectiveness.
Supervise, direct, and coordinate the work of subordinate personnel (as assigned).
Drive day trips to local sites and amusements (designated positions).
Deliver tech tutorials and support for patrons seeking training on cellphones, computers, and tablets (designated positions).
Conduct specialized recreation and/or aquatics activities at boathouse/aquatics facilities (designated positions).
Non-essential:
Develop and conduct participant surveys; interpret results and adjust programs based on findings.
Requirements
Experience: At least three years of increasingly responsible experience in a specialized recreation program area.
Education/Training: Equivalent to completion of twelfth grade, supplemented by specialized training in area of specialization, recreation, leisure studies, or a related field.
Licenses/Certificates: Valid Class C California Driver’s License with a safe driving record.
Designated positions: Possession of, or ability to obtain, a California CDL with Passenger Endorsement (training may be provided).
Certifications: Possession of, or ability to obtain, appropriate First Aid and CPR certificates.
Knowledge: Recreation/leisure services program development and implementation; planning and directing recreation programs; rules/equipment for assigned activities; first aid/CPR methods; safety precautions; record keeping; marketing principles; applicable federal/state/local laws and regulations.
Abilities: Develop and promote programs; coordinate/direct classes and activities; build community support; manage disruptive behavior; respond to emergencies and administer first aid/CPR; respond to public inquiries; interpret City policies; communicate clearly orally and in writing; follow oral/written instructions; build effective working relationships; supervise lower-level staff.
Physical/Work Requirements: Ability to participate in recreation activities including moderate to heavy lifting and prolonged standing/walking/running; vision sufficient to read documents and observe participants.
Conditions
Schedule: Varied and flexible hours; not to exceed 29 hours per week or 1,000 hours per fiscal year; may include evenings and weekends; may require extended hours.
Work Locations: May be based at the Coronado Community Center, John D. Spreckels Center, Club Room, Coronado Boathouse, Coronado Aquatics facility, parks and beaches, and other sites; may travel from site to site.
Environment: Indoor and outdoor settings; may be exposed to inclement weather; may travel outside City boundaries to attend meetings.
