Building Inspector

City of St Pete Beach is seeking a Building Inspector to conduct inspections of commercial and residential construction, alterations, and repairs for compliance with applicable building and trade codes. The role supports public safety and code compliance through inspections, plan reviews, documentation, and coordination with contractors, the public, and enforcement partners under the supervision of the Building Manager.

• Perform commercial and residential building and trade inspections (building, electrical, mechanical, plumbing) and review construction plans.
• Maintain inspection records and files and prepare reports.
• Schedule inspection requests, record inspection results, and interpret code requirements for contractors, engineers, architects, and the public.
• Assist code enforcement investigations related to potential violations (e.g., work without permits, unlicensed contractor activity).
• Inspect unsafe buildings with the Fire Marshal and Code Enforcement Officer and issue notices to abate unsafe conditions.
• Appear and provide testimony at code enforcement/special master hearings and in court when necessary.
• Meet with violators to support resolution and achieve compliance with codes and ordinances.
• Perform stormwater erosion and sedimentation control inspections.
• Assist at the permit counter and issue permits.
• Perform related duties as required.

• Education/Experience: Any combination of education and experience equivalent to high school graduation and considerable experience as an inspector, architect, engineer, or contractor with considerable public contact.

• Knowledge/Skills: Thorough knowledge of building construction materials and methods; strong understanding of state building and related codes, laws, and ordinances; ability to read and interpret plans, specifications, and blueprints; ability to detect poor workmanship, inferior materials, and fire/collapse hazards; ability to work effectively with building owners, contractors, and the public; firmness and tact in enforcing codes; ability to maintain effective working relationships.

• Licenses/Certifications: Valid State of Florida Driver License; State of Florida Standard Certification as a commercial building, commercial mechanical, commercial electrical, and commercial plumbing inspector; State of Florida stormwater management inspector certification or ability to obtain within six months of employment.

• Physical: Light work up to 20 lbs occasionally and 10 lbs frequently; requires climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, standing, walking, grasping, and repetitive motion; requires adequate speaking/hearing and visual acuity; work occurs in both indoor and outdoor environmental conditions.

• Work performed under the regular supervision of the Building Manager.
• Includes indoor and outdoor work conditions and requires operating a motor vehicle or equipment as part of job duties.
• Stormwater management inspector certification must be held or obtained within six months of employment.
