Associate Designer

Summary

PHOENIX Retail, LLC (Express and Bonobos) is seeking an Associate Designer to support men’s categories such as Sweaters/Knitwear or Woven Shirts based in the New York office. The role contributes across the end-to-end design process, partnering cross-functionally to bring seasonal product to life and support presentations and category development.

What you'll do

  • Generate strong, innovative ideas and create designs independently with guidance from Designers and Senior Designers.
  • Support assigned categories from concept through development completion.
  • Create and present big idea boards for concept/kickoff meetings.
  • Partner with the CAD team to design seasonal prints and patterns.
  • Research trends and monitor competitors and aspirational brands relevant to the category.
  • Collaborate with the Designer and Director of Fabric R&D to source new yarns and fabrics seasonally.
  • Communicate with Merchant partners to gather input and align on line development direction.
  • Balance business strategy needs with creative innovation in design decisions.
  • Create and maintain tech packs and BOMs; coordinate with Technical Design and Production on follow-ups.
  • Attend fittings, take notes, and update sketches/BOMs after fittings; progress toward leading fittings for own category.
  • Prepare presentation materials for design meetings and work toward presenting the category independently.

Requirements

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Apparel Design or Associate’s degree in Apparel Design.
  • Experience: 3–5 years of design experience in Men’s or Women’s apparel.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills; ability to manage multiple tasks.
  • Strong communication skills; collaborative cross-functional working style.
  • Detail-oriented; adaptable and flexible with shifting priorities.
  • Positive mindset, accountability, strong work ethic, punctuality, and dependable attendance.
  • Strong brand eye and trend awareness.
  • Excellent design and computer sketching skills.
  • Tools: Proficiency with WebPDM/BeProduct, Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, Windows (Outlook/Word/Excel), and Google products.
