Summary

The Associate Buyer (Special Sizes) will strengthen Macy’s competitive position by building assortments and making buying decisions that drive sales, margin, and inventory productivity. The role partners closely with vendors and cross-functional teams to respond to trends, execute pricing, and deliver customer-relevant product.

What you'll do

  • Make purchasing decisions to satisfy customer demand and deliver sales, inventory turn, and margin plans.
  • Analyze the competitive marketplace, identify whitespace opportunities, and recommend actions to address competitive challenges.
  • Collaborate with vendors to identify product opportunities and provide input to product development.
  • Support in-season business by influencing promotional strategies based on current performance and business needs.
  • Attend market appointments with strategic assortment plans and strong product knowledge aligned to customer preferences.
  • Set assortment-building vision and define calls to action with Planning, Pricing, and cross-functional partners.
  • Develop and execute assortment strategy in partnership with planning and related stakeholders.
  • Create pre-season assortment vision aligned to company priorities and insights from digital and planning counterparts.
  • Partner with Financial Planning to align department financial targets to assortment strategy and decide in-season changes based on forecasts.
  • Provide performance analysis (category/class/item) to support in-season item-level decisions and adjustments.
  • Maintain industry presence to build connections, identify new opportunities, and represent the Macy’s brand.
  • Coordinate with vendors on timely markdowns/MDAs/RTVs and ensure alignment with in-season inputs.
  • Use analytics (including dynamic pricing) to develop POS and permanent pricing strategies and ensure execution meets financial metrics.
  • Review discount rates and promotional performance and adjust to achieve sales and margin goals.
  • Execute POS pricing in promo planning tools and support permanent markdown execution processes.
  • Foster an inclusive, respectful environment that strengthens relationships with colleagues, customers, and communities.

Requirements

  • Experience: 3+ years of direct, related experience.

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience in a related field.

  • Financial business acumen: Ability to understand and analyze financial results to inform strategic decisions.

  • Retail strategy: Knowledge of market trends, customer behaviors, and competitive landscapes.

  • Analytical skills: Ability to work with probability, statistical inference, fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions in practical contexts.

  • Strategic planning: Experience driving strategies supporting compelling core and curated assortments.

  • Change management: Comfort leading through complexity and evolving away from legacy approaches that no longer fit strategy.

  • Communication: Clear, candid communication and comfort with open debate to surface strong ideas.

  • Collaboration: Ability to partner cross-functionally (e.g., Planning, Pricing, Digital leadership/GBMs) to align strategy.

  • Mindset/leadership: Growth mindset with ability to influence, coach, and act as a trusted partner and change agent.

  • Physical demands: Regular sitting, talking, hearing, and hand use; occasional movement/reaching; close vision required.
