Summary

Cranbrook Schools is hiring Teaching Artists for Create Camps to lead daily visual arts experiences in the studio and the Cranbrook Art Museum for grades 1–7. The role focuses on fostering innovation and self-expression through themed projects and object-based gallery exploration.

What you'll do

  • Facilitate dynamic art projects connected to camp themes and objects in the museum collection (resources and lesson plans provided).
  • Develop additional activities for campers as needed.
  • Maintain classroom control and manage students across a range of ages while supporting creativity and innovation.
  • Prepare and set up the studio classroom, organize supplies/material inventory, and tidy the studio daily.
  • Attend weekly team meetings and maintain open communication with Museum Education and Create Camp staff.
  • Collaborate with an Education Assistant in the classroom.

Requirements

  • Completed undergraduate degree.
  • Previous teaching experience working with youth.
  • Experience developing lesson plans for artmaking activities.
  • Ability to lead indoor and outdoor recreation and classroom activities.
  • Preferred: Undergraduate and/or graduate degree in Fine Arts, Elementary Education, or Art Education.

Conditions

  • Duration: 3–8 weeks (some flexibility).
  • Training starts: May 2026.
  • Camp dates: June 15 – August 7, 2026.
  • Schedule: Monday–Friday, 8:30am–3:30pm (approximately 35 hours/week).
  • Pay: $21.75/hour.
  • Class format: Small teacher-to-student ratios; work with an Education Assistant.
