Summary
Forerunner is an early-stage climate adaptation company helping local communities access and use flood risk data at scale. The Software Engineer Intern will work alongside experienced engineers to build and ship production features that support local governments preparing for climate-driven risks. This internship is hands-on across the full product development cycle using modern, AI-first engineering practices.
What you'll do
- Build and ship product features to improve the reliability, usability, and performance of Forerunner’s platform.
- Work across the stack on frontend components, APIs, mobile features, and/or data pipelines depending on the assigned project.
- Collaborate with engineers, product managers, designers, and customer-facing teammates to understand problems and deliver solutions.
- Participate in code reviews, design discussions, and sprint planning while learning modern engineering practices in an AI-first development environment.
- Engage with real-world municipal workflows and climate-driven risk problems to modernize tools used by communities.
Requirements
- Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
- Experience building software projects via coursework, internships, open-source contributions, or personal projects.
- Ability to program in at least one modern language (e.g., TypeScript, JavaScript, Python, Java, or similar).
- Strong foundation in data structures, algorithms, and system design fundamentals.
- Ability to learn quickly, take ownership, and solve ambiguous problems.
- Clear communication skills and enjoyment of collaborative teamwork.
- Interest in using technology to help communities adapt to climate change.
Bonus (not required):
- Experience with React and/or Node.js.
- Experience with React Native.
- Familiarity with SQL and working with data.
- Exposure to cloud platforms such as AWS or GCP.
- Interest in climate tech, civic technology, or government systems.
Conditions
- Internship dates: May 26, 2026 – Aug 14, 2026.
- Full-time: 40 hours/week.
- Pay range: $45–$55/hour.
- Hybrid work environment with hubs in Berkeley, CA; New York City, NY; and Portland, ME.
- Some remote work possible; in-office encouraged 2–3 days/week.
