Director, People Operations
Summary
Swing Education is an EdTech platform founded in 2015 that helps school districts source qualified substitute teachers and has been recognized as a Most Innovative Company in Education and a Great Place to Work (2024). The Director of People Operations will own People Operations strategy and lead a team delivering scalable programs across the corporate organization and substitute teacher workforce. The role ensures operational excellence, compliance, and reliable People data while partnering with leadership to align initiatives to business priorities.
What you'll do
- Partner with executive and functional leaders to align People initiatives with business goals, workforce planning, and organizational design.
- Guide talent planning, performance management, employee engagement, and data-informed decision-making.
- Oversee and optimize end-to-end People processes including recruiting, onboarding, performance management, engagement, and retention.
- Ensure consistent and equitable practices across compensation, benefits, leave, and employee relations.
- Lead execution of performance and talent processes that drive accountability and development.
- Improve systems and workflows to create an efficient, scalable employee experience for both corporate and substitute workforces.
- Own expertise and execution of full-cycle, multi-state payroll, compliance, reporting, and year-end processes.
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws; maintain audit readiness for 401(k) and related compliance reviews.
- Partner with Legal on employee relations matters and investigations; maintain handbooks, policies, and documentation; proactively mitigate risk.
- Support recruiting and selection practices; implement manager training and development; drive engagement and inclusion initiatives.
- Oversee HRIS and People systems for data integrity and accurate reporting; track and report key People metrics (turnover, engagement, hiring, performance outcomes).
- Lead and develop a small People Operations team; set goals and accountability; manage departmental planning and budget.
Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or related field, or equivalent practical experience.
7+ years of progressive HR/People Operations experience, ideally in a high-growth or scaling environment.
Experience leading core People programs and directly managing and developing People team members.
Strong knowledge of multi-state employment law, employee relations, and HR best practices.
Proven ability to improve and scale People processes in a fast-paced environment; able to balance strategy with hands-on execution in a lean team.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with comfort using data to guide decisions.
Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
Hands-on HRIS experience; UKG preferred.
Preferred: experience supporting high-volume or distributed workforces; building/scaling People infrastructure in Series B–D (or similar) environments.
Preferred certifications: SHRM-CP, SHRM-SCP, PHR, or SPHR.
Must have current authorization to work in the U.S. without employer sponsorship.
Conditions
Remote position; California-based candidates preferred.
No relocation assistance available.
Compensation range: $170,000–$180,000 USD annually (commensurate with experience and adjusted for cost of living by location).
