Community Enhancement Inspector
Summary
Chesterfield County is hiring a Community Enhancement Inspector to enforce property maintenance, zoning, and licensing ordinances within assigned areas. The role focuses on investigating violations, guiding residents and businesses toward compliance, and supporting enforcement actions when necessary. This position is part of an approved Career Development Plan offering progression opportunities and potential salary incentives based on performance and qualifications.
What you'll do
- Enforce the Virginia Uniform Statewide Property Maintenance Code, Chesterfield County Zoning Ordinance, and licensing ordinances.
- Inspect assigned geographic areas to identify violations of property maintenance, zoning, and licensing laws.
- Contact delinquent property owners and businesses, explain steps to compliance, and ensure compliance within a reasonable period.
- Issue and respond to communications and maintain records of interactions and correspondence (including official notices, citations, criminal complaints, and summons).
- Gather and document evidence establishing violations of county code.
- Bring criminal complaints before the magistrate and present evidence in General District Court.
- Build and maintain relationships with residents, apartment complex managers, community groups, and other stakeholders involved in community enhancement.
- Perform other duties as required.
Requirements
Education: High school diploma or GED required; college coursework and/or specialized training in urban planning, business, law enforcement, or related field desired; bachelor’s degree in these areas preferred.
Experience: Two years of experience in law enforcement, investigations, code enforcement, or related field; or equivalent combination of training and experience.
Language: Verbal and written fluency in both English and Spanish encouraged.
Licensing/Driving: Current valid driver’s license and good driving record required.
Driving record standards: Must not reflect six or more demerit points within the 24 months preceding anticipated hire date, or one major violation of six demerit points within the preceding 36 months. Out-of-state driving records must be obtained by applicant and presented at interview; must show at least three years of history and be dated within 30 days of interview date.
Screening: Pre-employment drug testing, FBI criminal background check, and education/degree verification required.
Conditions
Job type: Full-time.
Schedule: Monday–Friday, 8:30 a.m.–5:00 p.m.
Work location: Community Enhancement department.
