Summary

The Creative Director, Stories will lead OpenAI’s Stories program, shaping a slate of films that bring real AI use cases to life through documentary-driven, cinematic storytelling. The role exists to translate complex technology into grounded, human narratives and share AI’s real-world impact with broad audiences.
What you'll do
- Lead the creative vision and narrative strategy for OpenAI’s Stories program, developing films that highlight meaningful consumer AI use cases.
- Identify and develop compelling story ideas featuring creators, builders, and communities using AI in transformative ways.
- Drive stories from concept through script, editorial structure, production, and post-production.
- Creatively oversee film productions and collaborate with directors, cinematographers, editors, and production partners to achieve a high craft bar.
- Translate complex technology into clear, emotionally engaging, culturally relevant human narratives.
- Partner with product, research, communications, marketing, and story development stakeholders to surface and shape stories demonstrating AI’s impact.
- Guide the Stories team process from discovery and narrative development through production and post.
- Maintain a consistently high creative standard so films feel cinematic, thoughtful, and distinctly OpenAI.
Requirements
- Significant experience as a Creative Director, documentary filmmaker, or narrative director focused on long-form film or editorial storytelling.
- Strong portfolio demonstrating cinematic storytelling, documentary work, or narrative film.
- Proven ability to develop stories from early ideas through written narrative and visual execution.
- Experience directing or overseeing production with filmmakers, editors, and creative teams.
- Ability to translate complex or technical topics into engaging, human-centered stories.
- Collaborative, comfortable working with cross-functional partners in fast-moving environments.
- Strong instincts for identifying meaningful cultural and/or technological stories.
Conditions
- Travel is required.
- Compensation range listed as $266K–$295K annually (converted to a monthly estimate in the salary field).
