Summary

Macy’s is a long-standing retail brand focused on delivering innovative and customer-centered shopping experiences. The Buyer (Luggage) drives omnichannel sales, margin, turnover, and growth by building and managing pre-season and in-season assortments and executing a strategic merchandising vision. This role partners cross-functionally and with vendors to deliver sales and profit objectives while evolving strategies in a complex business environment.

What you'll do

  • Lead and manage assortment development, including selection and driver strategies, to maximize sales, margin, and turnover.
  • Develop and maintain strong vendor relationships; conduct regular vendor business reviews and future planning meetings.
  • Create a pre-season assortment vision aligned with company priorities and insights from Digital, Private Brands, and Planning partners.
  • Evaluate seasonal trends with Trend Research & Forecasting and vendors; recommend key trends and growth opportunities.
  • Partner with Financial Planning and Merchandise Planning to align financial targets with assortment strategy.
  • Collaborate with Private Brands and Merchandise Planning to guide product development strategy (e.g., color/sizing opportunities, testing new products/categories) and align with marketing/digital strategy.
  • Make in-season assortment and vendor changes based on sales, margin, and turnover forecasts.
  • Present ROF strategy and problem-resolution plans in partnership with Financial Planning.
  • Review category/class/item performance analysis; determine item-level changes and reorder opportunities.
  • Maintain an industry presence to build connections, identify new opportunities, and represent the Macy’s brand.
  • Establish pre-season pricing strategy with input from Digital; partner with Pricing on in-season adjustments.
  • Set content and promotional strategies with Merchandise Marketing and Digital, including FOB events; coordinate vendor marketing and co-op requests.
  • Develop and lead merchandising vision and strategy for a seamless in-store and online shopping experience.
  • Establish and communicate store merchandising strategies that optimize presentation and salability.
  • Foster an environment of acceptance and respect to strengthen relationships with colleagues, customers, and communities.

Requirements

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience in a related field.

  • Experience: 5+ years of related experience.

  • Core skills: Communication, leadership in ambiguity/complexity, cross-functional collaboration, interpersonal effectiveness, creative and strategic thinking.

  • Technical: Proficiency in MS Office.

  • Team/leadership capabilities: Building and developing diverse teams, empowering decision-making, influencing without direct authority, resilience and high energy.

  • Physical/role demands: Regular sitting, talking, hearing, and use of hands/fingers; occasional movement and reaching; requires close vision.

Conditions

  • Schedule: Full-time; flexible schedule based on department and company needs.

  • Location: New York, NY (United States).

  • Compensation: $132,480–$220,680 annually (based on job, location, and schedule).
