Standard Bots

CAD Designer

Office Middle $8.3k/mo

Summary

Standard Bots is a New York-based robotics company building AI-powered six-axis robot arms and custom automation solutions. As a CAD/Machine Designer on the Implementation team, you will translate customer requirements and site survey data into engineered robotic cell layouts, tooling, and fabrication-ready drawing packages to support successful deployments.

What you'll do

  • Create 3D models and detailed fabrication drawings for automation cells, EOAT, fixtures, machine guards, and structural supports using SolidWorks.
  • Design components and assemblies to manufacturing constraints for sheet metal, welded fabrications, and machined parts.
  • Manage bills of materials (BOMs) for sourcing and procurement.
  • Apply GD&T to produce manufacturable, inspectable, repeatable designs and production-ready drawing packages.
  • Conduct FEA on structural and load-bearing components to validate safety margins prior to release.
  • Develop full 3D cell layout models considering robot reach envelopes, collaborative safety clearances, operator access, and equipment footprints.
  • Define and document EOAT specifications, interface plates, quick-change systems, and tool-change architectures with Automation Engineers.
  • Collaborate on mechanical integration details including I/O routing, pneumatic manifold placement, cable management, and sensor mounting.
  • Review installation sequences and propose design-for-assembly improvements to simplify field deployment.
  • Present concept designs, CAD models, and layout drawings to customer engineering/operations teams; incorporate feedback and site constraints.
  • Deliver complete as-built documentation upon handoff, including drawings, BOMs, and design notes.
  • Build and maintain reusable component libraries and enforce internal standards for templates, revision control, and file management.
  • Identify recurring design challenges and propose standard solutions to reduce future engineering time.

Requirements

  • 3–5 years of hands-on CAD design experience in industrial automation, robotics integration, or custom manufacturing.
  • Portfolio demonstrating designs taken from concept through fabrication and installation.
  • Experience designing EOAT, fixtures, or custom automation components for collaborative or industrial robots.
  • Expert proficiency in SolidWorks; familiarity with AutoCAD for 2D layouts and wiring diagrams.
  • Strong GD&T knowledge and experience creating production-ready drawing packages for external fabrication shops.
  • Design experience with sheet metal, welded structural steel, machined parts, and 3D-printed components.
  • Familiarity with robot reach envelopes, collaborative safety zone requirements, and machine guard design standards.
  • Experience specifying off-the-shelf automation components (e.g., pneumatic actuators, quick-change tool changers, linear rails, force/torque sensors, vision mounts).
  • Working knowledge of electrical conduit routing, cable management, and pneumatic line placement in mechanical assemblies.
  • Soft skills: meticulous attention to detail; collaborative and communicative; self-directed workload management.
  • Nice to have: SolidWorks certification; robot simulation/offline programming tools (e.g., RoboDK, DELMIA); experience with machine tending/palletizing/welding automation/assembly; familiarity with ANSI/CE safety; regulated-industry design; OSHA or equivalent safety training.
  • Education (nice to have): Associate’s or Bachelor’s in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Design Technology, or equivalent practical experience.

Conditions

  • Location: onsite 5 days/week in the South East Pennsylvania shop.

  • Compensation: stated range $80,000–$120,000 per year (base salary), with total package commensurate with seniority and skill level.

  • Equity: employee stock options for full-time employees.

  • Benefits for regular full-time employees: paid time off; medical, dental, and vision insurance; life insurance; disability insurance; 401(k).
