Director, People Operations

Summary

Wheel is a virtual care platform company enabling innovative organizations to deliver high-quality virtual care at scale. The Director of People Operations will design and run end-to-end people programs across the employee lifecycle, partnering with cross-functional leaders to strengthen culture, engagement, and operational scalability.

What you'll do

  • Own and optimize People Operations across the full employee lifecycle from onboarding through offboarding, ensuring scalable, compliant, people-centered processes.
  • Implement AI to optimize people processes and improve manager and employee experience.
  • Ensure compliance with employment requirements, including documentation and state-by-state regulations, and proactively mitigate risk as the company scales.
  • Develop and execute a People communications strategy that supports engagement, transparency, and connection while reinforcing culture and values.
  • Lead performance management frameworks (goal setting, reviews, feedback, development planning) to drive consistency and empower managers and employees.
  • Establish a culture of continuous learning and development through proactive feedback and goal-setting.
  • Oversee People systems and tools (including HRIS and Ashby) and manage compensation and benefits programs for accuracy, efficiency, and strong employee experience.
  • Create and scale engagement programs that support connection, belonging, and performance in a remote-first environment.

Requirements

  • 5–7+ years of People Operations experience, including 3–5+ years in HR Business Partner roles.
  • Strong cross-functional collaboration and project management skills to coordinate multiple groups and deliver on time.
  • Demonstrated leadership and mentorship capabilities to attract, retain, and scale high-performing teams.
  • Strategic partnering and critical thinking skills to advise leaders as they scale teams.
  • HR compliance subject matter expertise.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to synthesize details into actionable recommendations for senior leadership.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business, Operations, or a related field.
  • Experience in healthcare or digital health is highly desirable.

Conditions

  • Location: US Remote (Austin, TX preferred).

  • Compensation: $170,000–$230,000 base plus 10% bonus (final offer varies by scope, experience, education, location, and market factors).
