Summary
The City of Billings is hiring a Probationary Firefighter to protect life and property by responding to fire, rescue, and medical emergencies. The role supports fire suppression and prevention operations, basic life support, inspections, maintenance, and ongoing training.
What you'll do
- Respond to fire alarms and emergency calls; perform rescue, entry, ventilation, salvage, and overhaul operations.
- Lay/connect hose, operate nozzles, direct water streams, and assist with pumping apparatus operations and periodic testing.
- Raise/climb ladders, ventilate structures, and perform forcible entry as needed.
- Operate firefighting, rescue, and medical equipment (e.g., extinguishers, hand lines, smoke ejectors, salvage covers, EMS equipment).
- Respond to medical incidents; assess patients, provide first aid, control bleeding, and apply immobilization techniques until relieved by medical personnel.
- Respond to hazardous materials incidents and help control/secure the scene.
- Assist with investigations, preserve evidence, and secure fire scenes.
- Drive and operate equipment under limited conditions.
- Conduct equipment checks before emergencies; prepare apparatus for subsequent alarms.
- Participate in drills and attend continuing/advanced training in firefighting and emergency medical care.
- Perform home and commercial fire prevention inspections and pre-fire planning; check occupancy loads and fire lane violations.
- Assist in training new employees; conduct station tours; maintain records; maintain station, grounds, and equipment; operate radio equipment.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Education: High school diploma (Associate’s degree in Fire Science preferred).
- Experience: Up to 1 year of combined education and experience in fire suppression and prevention.
- Certifications: National Registry EMT Basic; State of Montana EMT Basic certification (must be possessed or obtained within 6 months of employment) and maintained throughout career.
- Testing/Screening: Must pass pre-employment drug and nicotine test, psychological exam, physical exam, and federal/state fingerprint criminal background check.
- Application requirement: CPAT results must be attached and dated within 1 year of the application date.
- Skills: Good interpersonal skills.
Conditions
- Pay: $24.8770/hour at hire; up to $34.5590/hour as a firefighter; increases with promotion to Engineer and Captain.
- Schedule (Recruit Academy): Four 10-hour days; days off TBD.
- Schedule (Post-Academy): 27-day cycle with 7 consecutive 24-hour shifts (48 hours off between shifts), followed by 6 consecutive days off.
