Fire Captain

Summary

The City of Haines City is hiring a Fire Captain to supervise personnel assigned to a fire company or station under the direction of the Battalion Chief. The role leads and manages emergency response operations while ensuring personnel, equipment, and facility readiness in a safe and professional environment.

What you'll do

  • Supervise and direct daily station activities, emergency operations, and station management for assigned personnel.
  • Respond to fire, medical, rescue, and hazardous materials incidents; assume incident command as required until relieved.
  • Ensure compliance with department policies, procedures, and operational guidelines.
  • Conduct training, drills, and continuing education to maintain operational proficiency.
  • Oversee inspection, maintenance, and readiness of apparatus, equipment, and facilities.
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate incident action plans.
  • Prepare reports regarding incidents, training, personnel matters, and station activities.
  • Mentor, coach, and support professional development of subordinate personnel.
  • Enforce safety practices to protect the health and welfare of personnel.
  • Support community risk reduction efforts including public education, fire prevention programs, and station tours.
  • Participate in performance evaluations, disciplinary actions, and promotional processes per policy.
  • Ensure accurate and timely NERIS and EMS reporting.
  • Serve as Acting Battalion Chief when assigned.
  • Maintain ability to perform duties of Firefighter, EMT/Paramedic, Driver Engineer, and Lieutenant as operationally required.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Education: High School Diploma or GED.

  • Experience: Minimum 7 years of full-time firefighting experience, including 2 years in a supervisory role.

  • Required certifications/licenses (Florida):

    • Firefighter II Certificate of Compliance
    • EMT License/Certification
    • Pump Operator Certificate of Competency
    • 45 Hour Aerial Operations Course
    • Fire Officer I Certificate of Competency
    • Valid Florida Class E Driver’s License
  • Preferred:

    • Paramedic (PMD) License/Certification
    • Fire Inspector I Certificate of Competency
    • Fire Officer II Certificate of Competency
    • Associate’s Degree in Fire Science or related field
  • Skills/abilities: Strong oral and written communication; ability to lead under emergency and routine conditions; proficiency in firefighting, EMS, rescue operations, fire prevention and inspections; knowledge of applicable federal/state/local laws and standards; knowledge of NIMS/ICS; ability to use Microsoft Office; ability to operate/maintain pumper and aerial apparatus, job-related tools, and radio equipment; ability to lift/carry up to 150 pounds.

  • Other requirements: Pass post-offer drug screen, physical examination, and background checks including CJIS; maintain required certifications throughout employment; obtain and maintain Fire Inspector I and Fire Officer II within 24 months of appointment; remain current on regulations and occupational health and safety standards.

Conditions

  • Position open until April 01, 2026.
  • Work occurs in office, station, and hazardous emergency environments with exposure to extreme weather, fire/smoke, hazardous materials, unstable structures, infectious diseases, loud noise, confined spaces, heights, and other operational hazards.
  • May be required to report to work during declared emergencies in Polk County.
  • City is a Drug-Free Workplace; post-offer pre-employment drug screen and physical required (and applicable background checks including CJIS).
