Summary
The City of Wheat Ridge is seeking a Probation Officer to provide professional supervision and case management for juvenile and adult defendants placed on probation and to monitor additional compliance cases referred by the Court. The role supports public safety and accountability by assessing needs, enforcing court-ordered conditions, and recommending appropriate sanctions and services while helping manage daily probation department operations.
What you'll do
- Supervise defendants on probation, deferred judgment, and deferred prosecution through in-person meetings, phone contacts, mail-in reports, video conferencing, and case file review.
- Track and monitor court-ordered conditions for compliance cases through interviews, investigations, and assessments; file petitions to revoke and testify at revocation hearings.
- Assess needs and behavior throughout supervision; develop case plans focused on pro-social behavior and repairing harm to the community and victims; apply a continuum of sanctions and incentives using professional discretion.
- Collaborate with County, State, and Social Services agencies as needed to coordinate probation activities.
- Maintain and apply knowledge of community resources and eligibility requirements; make referrals for appropriate services.
- Appear in Court for probation/compliance hearings to report status and progress, recommend modifications to terms and conditions, and recommend sanctions.
- Coordinate, enroll, and monitor participants in electronic monitoring, county work crew programs, and drug/alcohol testing.
- Enter and maintain electronic probation files; provide records to authorized parties in accordance with records retention schedules and statutes on sealed/expunged cases.
- Compile and prepare statistical records related to probation.
- Research criminal history and defendant records using databases (including NCIC, CCIC, Colorado State Courts-Data Access, Denver County Court-Government Access, Reliatrax Unified Network, and Sentry) while following strict confidentiality and information-handling rules.
- Develop processes and procedures to comply with new laws and sentencing requirements; stay current on best practices affecting probation supervision.
- Conduct pre-sentence investigations and prepare written reports with sentencing recommendations considering public safety.
- Assist with Municipal Court administrative duties when requested and serve as a Court representative on citywide committees.
Requirements
- Education: Bachelor’s degree with major coursework in criminal justice, social sciences, psychology, sociology, or a closely related field.
- Experience: Two (2) years of experience in probation supervision.
- Substitution: Six (6) years of experience in probation supervision may be substituted for the bachelor’s degree and two years of experience.
- Background/eligibility: Must pass a thorough background investigation and fingerprinting; must obtain CCIC certification within six (6) months of hire.
- Legal restriction: Any felony conviction disqualifies a candidate under state law; certain misdemeanor convictions involving lack of integrity or moral turpitude may also be disqualifying.
- Compliance: Ability to adhere to strict guidelines for proper use, distribution, and destruction of criminal justice information and maintain confidentiality.
