Junior Data Scientist

Summary

The New York City Police Department (NYPD) Office of Management Analysis and Planning (OMAP) is seeking a Junior Data Scientist to support its research, evaluation, and assessment mission. The role develops data science services and analyses to solve department challenges, inform leadership, and improve policy and operational decision-making.

What you'll do

  • Develop data science services and analytic products to address departmental challenges and improve decision-making.

  • Build statistical and machine learning models and supporting metrics tied to business objectives and operational effectiveness.

  • Work with structured and unstructured datasets including text, geospatial, and network data.

  • Write clean, maintainable code to integrate data science outputs with business intelligence and reporting tools.

  • Create visualizations and briefing/communication materials for department leadership.

  • Automate workflows and business tools (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, ArcGIS, Power BI).

  • Manage multiple projects, meet deadlines, and collaborate cross-functionally with internal stakeholders, agencies, and academic institutions.

Requirements

  • Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university.

  • Three years of satisfactory full-time experience related to the projects and policies to be studied in the position.

  • Experience with Python and machine learning; ability to develop statistical and ML models (e.g., scikit-learn, statsmodels, PyTorch).

  • Ability to develop metrics and conduct analyses to improve operational effectiveness.

  • Data visualization and business communication skills (e.g., Pandas, NumPy, Matplotlib).

  • Preferred: experience with unstructured data such as text, geospatial, and network data (e.g., NLTK, GeoPy, NetworkX).

  • Required: ability to write clean, simple code to automate business tools (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, ArcGIS, Power BI).

  • Strong oral and written communication, analytical, organizational, interpersonal skills, and attention to detail.

  • Ability to manage multiple projects, work independently and in a team, and work cross-functionally.

  • Preferred: knowledge of criminal justice policy and research literature.

Conditions

  • Work location: 1 Police Plaza.

  • Schedule: Monday–Friday; shift options listed as 8 x 4 or 10 x 6.

  • Benefits/perks: potential eligibility for Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) and related repayment assistance programs.

  • Residency: New York City residency is not required.
